Roy, Kim, Katie, and Roy Jr.

We were in Red Lodge today for the Carbon County Central Committee picnic. It was a lovely event and a great way for me to say goodbye to Montana for a short while. Did you know that I’m off to Notre Dame to start my postdoctoral fellowship? I leave tomorrow but I’ll be back in Montana many times before this election, and I’ll be keeping up this blog from afar. Don’t forget about me!

Today we were in Helena at the Montana GOP Headquarters and we had a lovely time meeting with the Young Republicans. I am so grateful for their hard work; they are invaluable to so many campaigns across the state! We are lucky to have them on board.

Calamity Jane Country

August 22, 2008 | 1 Comment

Today I discovered that my favorite Western figure, Calamity Jane, had a ranch in Miles City! While my dad was busy with interviews at the Miles City Star, we had the chance to explore some of Calamity Jane’s old haunts. I loved the Olive Hotel, built in 1899, and wonder if Calamity Jane spent much time there. I also wonder if her sidekick from the musical–a girl called Katie Brown–ever existed. I hope so!

Today we traveled to Columbus to attend the Farmers’ Market! I really enjoyed meeting people and sampling all the lovely foods.

Here I am tasting some apple butter. It was so good!

We bought a delicious pie here.

After Farmers’ Market we went to the most adorable restaurant called Uncle Sam’s Eatery for the Stillwater County Central Committee meeting. The place is so patriotic and all the sandwiches are named after American presidents!

Isn’t their menu fabulous? I was in a bipartisan mood so I ordered the J.F.K. sandwich!

I was delighted to be back in Red Lodge today for my dad’s fundraiser. Here is a picture of us in front of a bank that the Sundance Kid tried to rob on September 18, 1887! My dad gave a fantastic speech at his fundraiser. I’m so proud of him!

What a darling little Republican!

The opposition paparazzi comes to all our events now!

I just had to take a picture of the old Red Lodge Opera House!

Today the campaign brought us to Crow Fair and the Little Bighorn Battlefield! I last visited the battlefield when I was in the fourth grade so I was delighted to be back. The history of this place is fascinating; it marks the Battle of the Little Bighorn when Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer was defeated by Lakota and Cheyenne warriors in 1876.

Today we stopped in Deer Lodge which is the second oldest town in Montana! While my dad was being interviewed at the fair, my mum and I had the chance to visit the Old Montana Prison. I loved learning about the vigilante history of the 1860s which led the Territorial Legislature to request funding for the prison. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be in Deer Lodge back then!

Later this afternoon, we stepped into the 1950s when we visited an old-fashioned A & W diner, complete with intercoms in the parking lot–although they don’t seem to work anymore.

Here we are at the All American A & W. My new friends said that the person in the car looks like Ronald Reagan. What do you think?

We had the most wonderful time at the Pablo Pow Wow! What do you think of my new beaded barrette?

My dad, Roy Brown, with Mary Coffee holding a beaded bag made by her grandmother.

After the Pow Wow we attended a lovely outdoor fundraiser hosted by Jerry and Pat Molen. I was so amazed to discover that Jerry Molen is an academy award winning producer of several successful films such as Jurassic Park, Hook, Rain Man and Schindler’s List! Jerry and his wife have been wonderful supporters of my dad and I was delighted to meet them.

I wish I were a rodeo queen! We had a lovely day in Kalispell, Montana. I was so touched that we were joined by 150 supporters who walked with us in the Kalispell parade. It was a sea of Roy Brown shirts! I also had the chance to attend the rodeo this evening and it made me wish I had learned how to barrel race. Is there still time? Below are some pictures of our dearest friends who made this day such a success.

Today we found ourselves back in Helena! My dad gave a press conference to introduce his brilliant plan to create a government accountability portal so that taxpayers can easily find out how the government is spending their tax dollars.  He said that there should be “sunshine and lightbulbs” in state government!

My dad, Roy Brown, at an interview in the Old Supreme Court Chambers of the Capitol Building.

I love the beautiful artwork in the capitol!

After the press conference we traveled to Fairmont Hot Springs, stopping in Butte on the way.  My mum and I visited the Butte shopping center which was built by her father in 1967.

We also visited my dad’s college, Montana Tech, where he graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1974.

Here I am passing out envelopes at the Fairmont Hot Springs fundraiser.
